The Suzuki GN 250 is the first bike for many motorcyclists.
Review of the GN 250 submitted on 2006-11-05.

The machine itself has had little change since the early 1980’s when the feeble drum brake that used to provide the front brakes was replaced with a disk version that proved much better. Later models also received a Tachometer and a touch up in the cosmetics but after that it is essentially the same bike.

The advantages of a GN 250 are that is a stable forgiving motorcycle that suits learners. Its price is higher than many would expect due to the captive 250 learners market which inflates a 250’s inherent worth.

In the very tight twisty roads that exist on New Zealand’s West Coast my GN held its own against the sports bike of the era (early 1990’s) however as soon as the roads opened up at all the GN was left gasping in everyone’s wake. This bike struggles to maintain decent open road and motorway (Freeway) speeds and must be thrashed to do so. Thus it is better to pay a bit extra for one that is low in mileage as getting someone’s caned learner bike can result in nasty bills. Things to specifically guard against with this bike are:

1) Do not run on a failing battery. This will almost certainly blow the bikes charging system.
2) The headlight is substandard for open road travel at night.
3) The right hand side cover is prone to falling off and hard to find a replacement for.
4) They tend to burn a bit of oil resulting in low oil levels. If you run the bike low on oil the rockers and valves in the Overhead Cam tend to need attention afterwards.
5) They have no overtaking speed left over 60 mph and little under it.
6) Single cylinder bikes have a tendency to put a strain on the drive chain. In the event the chain gets stretched or to worn you will lose a few HP and you have none to spare. Worn chains tend to impact on the swing arm bearings and thus must be avoided at all costs.
7) They are not empowered with enough HP to make a pillion anything but a liability.
8) Being air cooled the exhaust system gets very hot and the muffler is good at burning pillions legs when they dismount.
9) They are often thrashed, buyer beware.

The GN is a good forgiving motorcycle for those learning to ride.

Unfortunately young male riders tend to get used to its low horsepower output quickly. Combined with the fact that the GN lacks street credibility in terms of looks and performance many riders thrash them and take risks trying to keep up with more powerful bikes.

These risks coupled with an inherent lack of respect can result in accidents taking place. The one area where the GN holds its own is on tight rough roads where its linear predictable power delivery becomes an asset. Watch out for older models as they are prone to electrical faults in the CDI and charging system. This may have improved in the more recent models. The GN is generally disparaged by other motorcyclists. Many have a GN in their dark pasts but this is easier to confess if one is now sitting astride an R1 or GSXR 1000.
